Hi All! / Salve a Tutti
Hi All! / Salve a Tutti
Hello everyone! I am new to the group. I am here on the recommendation of Ken Johnson in Canada who has been a huge help with my most recent project at 1964 Piaggio Ape AC4T. I purchased it from a gentleman down in Louisiana and brought it back up to my home in Des Moines, Iowa. I am just getting started on the restoration and I can use all the advice and help finding parts that I can get.
One of the first items I will need to locate is the starter. Thank you all so much in advance for your help, and I am glad to be a part of the community.
Matthew Smith
PS. I added some pictures so if any buddy can provide any more information on this Ape it would be extremely helpful!

Ciao a tutti!

Thank you everyone for the welcome! What makes an Ape a "Luxury Machine"? I was asking Ken whether this should be restored as a Calessino or not? Here are some more pictures for you.olandese volante ha scritto:you have a luxury machine..........make more pics and you will be told more ........

Grazie a tutti per il benvenuto! Che cosa rende una scimmia una "macchina di lusso"? Mi è stato chiesto Ken se questo deve tornare ad essere uno Calessino o no? Ecco le immagini un po 'di più per voi.

Re: Hi All! / Salve a Tutti
the bad news is that your engine is not an ape engine , at least not an ac4 one...
you have a lot of work to do and parts to find .
yes it must be a calessino again and slowly you will gain more knowledge on that type .
your real best friend is your camera , make pictures and when you un screw something make pictures ...
the part you can stow away is the seat and the "engine hood/seat holder "
you have a jealous making speedo
the next thing to do is check out the carburator and see what type it is , you should find MA and a number on it .
the air filter and the carb can then be removed and stowed away for later restoration .
boxes and a big marker are handy.......
the next part should be the exhaust again picture picture picture .....then when dismounted make some pics of it and post them here .
when you are at that point i will write you some more if you want it .
as Ken already said : its a real ape it has chain drive ........a vespa with two wheels .........anyway yours is luxury as its a calessino .............in general the most wanted api are calessino and pentaro , both do cost money to restore .......however you are near Canada ( relatively ) and Ken has wood types people dream of here ......also has a cabinet maker that knows his job ................
start by getting info from the piaggio museum ( ken knows how to do that)
the window rubber can be gotten from aronne and the curved sections can be made from modern plastic (scratch and sun resistent 1mm polycabonate ) this is cheap and easy but only works with a new rubber ( the old ones are already stiff and became too large for this solution )
bye for now

Re: Hi All! / Salve a Tutti
That is great advice. Is this what it should look like when complete? It is the closest I have found online to looking what I own.

Here is a picture of the Carb, it appears to be a DellOrto (MA19B7). I also have some other pictures as well. Do you have any idea what type of engine this is with this number (B-792S5 98257)?olandese volante ha scritto:the bad news is that your engine is not an ape engine , at least not an ac4 one...

Re: Hi All! / Salve a Tutti
maybe i am mistaken on the engine..........take off the weird cooling schroud
carb and filter should be dismounted and put in a box they seem ok, just some work.
the differential is easy as its the modern one ( my manual is no good for you however)
i do have a differential lying around in italy so parts can be found .
there is this number....i think the answer has to come from piaggio or our friend 3rad .(ask ken)
the first thing to do is taking it apart slowly and fill boxes : carb in a box with the filter .
exhaust in a box with the triangle .
mudgards in a box , see if you have all the wheel nuts and a spare wheel (rim).
taking the ape apart should be done in a certain sequence ...........looking at stuff as well
getting the piaggio info is more important than you think , espescially for reference purposes.
