Smod: If you check out Restoration 6.ppsx on my website I've made revisions and added your photographs regarding the changing of oil in the crankcase. The neat thing is that you'd named each photo so I was able to use some of the Italian in the slides. Great idea. grazie, Ken

Good to hear you've been working on the Ape, not good news about the Monster inside. Shell SAE 40 oil 900ml is what I use, SAE30 when it's cold outside so for most of the year I use SAE30. Ken

I have another question. The SAE30 oil it's the same of 80w90 oil

No. Anytime there is a "w" between two numbers it's a multigrade oil and isn't to be used. According to the Manual, only a single grade oil is to be used and the container should be stamped SAE40. 80w90 is a very heavy gear oil and will not splash up onto all the gears and bearings as well as SAE40, especially when it's cold. I'll post the Manual page here for reference. Ken

io ho usato olio 80w90 , mi sono fidato (sbagliando) di un meccanico che mi ha detto che era uguale al SAE40,
ma a metà marzo, quando lo cambierò di nuovo userò olio SAE40.

80w90 is as heavy as a gear oil. The w between two numbers indicates it has detergents in the oil to help clean the oil but an Ape doesn't have an oil filter so the dirty bits are always being flung around inside and will cause wear. Change the oil frequently, do it when the motor is hot after a good run so the oil flows freely, clean the drain plug magnet and use approx. 900ml of fresh SAE40 oil. Check the oil level frequently, especially if you have drips underneath it when it's parked. There's not much oil and the difference between the Minimum and Maximum levels on the dipstick isn't that great so pay attention to the oil level. Back when I had my Jaguar it took 6 quarts of oil so there was a bit more available. Follow the Manual and you won't go wrong "Simon says". Ken

Gli oli multigrado ,tipo SAE10w50, SAE10w40 eccetera indicano questo:
10w40: olio invernale (w=winter) fluido anche a -15°C (viscosità 10)ma che non perde le proprietà lubrificanti anche ad alte temperature di esercizio (visc.40): quindi un olio generico, semisintetico adatto a tutte le temperature nostrane.
Ma guai a usarlo nelle frizioni a bagno d'olio..slittano sempre. (provato tanti anni fa su un garellino50 )
In Siberia sarà usato un 5w30 (esempio) , in Africa o in Dubai certamente un SAE40-50.
I SAE 80w90 ( es. agip rotra)sono ..relativamente fluidi da fresco, vengono principalmente usati nelle scatole differenziali di auto e camion. Dopo un certo uso, diventano neri e densi in virtù delle spiccate qualità detergenti proprie che tengono in sospensione le microscopiche particelle di metallo staccatesi dagli ingranaggi per normale usura.

Here is the Scheduled Maintenance page from my P601 P601V Owners Manual - I have a few ring bound copies left from a batch I had made. And so, I use SAE30 in the cold months and SAE40 in the hot months. As for my buddy Simon, he's a Ragdoll cat, part Himalayan and part Burmese. Loves to climb and is quite intrigued with Api and little bags of spare parts! He can jump up and walk the top edge of a door! He was helping me today in my shop while I was removing the windshield from the P501 in "Vespacar Restoration". - Ken
