I have one of only two Piaggio Ape imported New into New Zealand in 1966.

When I got it, it was in a very sorry state and some pieces are missing. Apparently it is a rare model, it only came with the electric start and the starter is missing. I have asked a number of people about the missing pieces but I have been unlucky.

What should I do? does any know where one is? Can I fabricate a replacement?

Talk to an early VW restorer. Bosch starter from same time period. My Police Ape was also missing the starter. Mario NYC on this site may be able to get some numbers off his starter for reference - Ken

I sure can, and have found the starters for 12v available, but can't say whether it would fit yours. You'll have to check. The VW generator will work on your setup, probably not the starter - too large, and you'd be fabbing a lot of pieces to make it work.

I'll include the 6v now, 12v next. I do have a dynamo starter listing too, but that's not your model I see.

I can access the twelve volt starter and assembly. like the one above. does this just bolt on if so I will go down this path and replace the generator

It means I will have to replace some other parts but it would get my project moving again

It is also 12v. I have seen another available elsewhere at other times. I have seen them in Germany and occasionally France.

It a 6v model, so the clutch cover is different, but it doesn't matter if I have to replace a number of parts.

I think that it would be easier that way
