Driveshaft Couplings - close to disaster

Messaggio da Simmo »

I bought my p601 in the summer and have been using it as a working/hobby vehicle. The latest job has been transporting logs across fields and up some steep inclines by road - probably 20 loads. I knew the flexible couplings needed replacing and had ordered some new ones from Italy which arrived yesterday. Fitted them today and it was clear I’ve been very foolish and very lucky - both couplings had broken in multiple places 😬
All fixed now thanks to same great photos in the guide section.

You came within one mm of a major disaster. Keep an eye on the oil boots at the top end of the driveshafts that contain oil seals at the differential. All the flailing about may have worn the oil seals. Maintenance tips here - Ken - https://www.kjjohnson.ca/piaggio/APE%20 ... /index.php - In the case of this client the yoke broke and required replacement

Thank you Ken. Your photo guide is very helpful and a great benefit for Ape newcomers - the workshop/service manuals are good on some things but miss many of practical the hints and tips you’d get with say a Haynes manual. Your guide is a terrific piece of work - much appreciated 👍
So far I’ve decoked the cylinder head, rebuilt the carb, replaced the stator and brake master cylinder/wheel cylinders so very much a rolling rebuild. Next job is the clutch - works ok but get some clunking as I change gear and some driveline shunt as soon as I engage first gear. Changed the oil for fresh 10w/40 and adjusted the clutch which has made it better but still feels like clutch isn’t fully disengaging drive. Have been reading through your guide on clutch so will probably take the plunge in next month or so once weather forces me into the workshop!

Remember to oil both sides of the new clutch plate before installing it.
