The bodywork will be the biggest problem - the rest is a lot of work getting all the bits and pieces but not impossible with patience - best of luck - Ken

Any chance of finding another P501 with a decent body but perhaps minus the motor - could be cheaper to switch and much easier on the pocketbook. The bonus would be a source of all the small parts, some of which could be sold to help pay for the restoration. Do you have a garage where you can do the restoration? That way you could do a lot of preparation work before beginning and it would shorten the time needed. The pianale would be easier to repair if it had removeable side panels, I think yours are fixed. - Ken

Then you start with all the bits & pieces. Our local garage has a mediablaster (glass beads) where I clean all the parts first. You can even put a tire and rim inside and clean the rim without hurting the tire. All the little pieces are cleaned in a wire basket. Paint the pieces and hang them up to dry and await installation.
Are you going to be able to keep the Ape out of service while you work on it or will you have to do it in stages? I suggest you go to Api di Ken in the Forum and start on page 1. You'll see lots of what I start with and how everything is done. I have a friend who owns a powder coating business. After straightening the pianale sides and tailgate myself, I took them to him and he soda blasted everything and powder coated them in either grey zinc primer or finish black paint. He can do most colours. Primer is for when I'm going to have it finish painted a colour he doesn't have or in automotive paint which is done at a local body shop. All the other pieces I do myself, first media blasting at the local garage, paint either with a brush or spray paint using Temclad rustproofing paint. Powder coating gives you 10 times more finish paint than when spray painted, so it's stronger. I would start with the pianale box which when removed will allow you access to the motor and frame/suspension. If you must use the Ape I'd make a simple wooden pianale while I restored or replaced it. You are facing a huge job so careful planning is a necessity. Fixing and painting the cabin will be the expensive part. Ken

Depending on how original you want the Ape to look when you're finished you can do the frame, suspension and even the box members from the cabin back in black rustproof paint. First you must get off all the rust you can with a wire brush and sandpaper and paint everything with a brush. Two coats. Henry Ford painted Model T cars with a brush. Nice and smooth, no runs, gloss black. When the cab is to be done all the rear end including the motor etc. can be covered with cloth. Post some interior photos especially the floor area near the brake pump and battery, it'll be the worst, so we can see. Here are some photos of MPR2T+25905+ at the start of it's restoration. I left the interior blue and with colour matching paint it turned out real nice and helped to save some money. Sorry about the lack of Italian - Ken

Turn the brake drum so it's smooth, use a wire brush to take off as much rust as you can and then paint it (everywhere but the turned surface where the brake shoe touches. I use Tremclad aluminum rust paint) - For storage put a bit of grease on the turned surface and remove it with Varsol when ready to install. - One piece at a time, it's like new!) - Ken

I use SDL free translation so I'll try both English and Italian when I post a reply, perhaps you'll understand more of what I'm trying to say. Ken -
