It's the ventilation tube of the cylinder head and must be clean to act as an exhaust of fumes which then lead to the air filter box for recycling. Remember there is no gasket between the clinder head and the cylinder so having this vent tube clean is critical.

Ape P501 pianale restoration My machinist/welder made some stands with wheels I supplied to roll the Ape in and out of the body shop assemblyThis motor has been overhauled - 63.6 piston (3rd oversize) I believe the stock that was left with the original importer was somewhat depleted, pity it wasn't a 63.2 because there would be room for further overhauls.The cylinder, piston walls and rings are not damaged. The excessive carbon would have been caused by the big fire in the carburetor with soot going up the intake manifold and depositing on the top of the piston. A good cleaning, replacement of the wrist pin and connecting rod needle bearing should suffice - an initial test run will confirm what I think and I'll replace the circlips with new onesThis was the fire in the carburetor causing the sootThe supporto elastico wasn't damaged, the fire was internal in the carburetor

If there's a lot of oil and dirt on the motor first use a 'motor shampoo' ( I use Foamy Clean ) Let it sit for a few minutes and then use a power washer. It will remove most but not all of the oil and grease. Use a Windex bottle to spray Varsol or paint thinner on the oil residue and then wash again. Make sure the carburetor inlet is covered. Then use a series of small brass wire brushes and nylon brushes when the motor is dry. Use a spray can of brake and parts cleaner for areas around bolts to remove oil residue.
I have access to a media blaster for fine cleaning of parts that are removed (clutch cover, intake manifold) but make sure to use the parts cleaner to remove grit from the media blaster.
Once cleaned I use Tremclad Clear spray paint which gives a nice finish and stops the aluminum from Oxidizing and pitting. High Heat enamel spray paint for the cylinder and muffler and the large motor fan. Don't paint the cylinder head, simply clean it with the media blaster. Springs can be cleaned and well oiled although I painted mine.
A plastic tub under the motor on the test stand catches most of the dirt and cleaning liquids.
Start at the top of the motor and work your way down. - Ken

Ciao ken seguo anche io con interesse i tuoi lavori di restauro e voglio farti i complimenti per i tuoi restauri veramente eccezionali,complimenti per la tua esperienza nel settore.Anche io sono proprietario di un p501 acquistato circa un mese fa,è in buone condizioni ma voglio restaurarlo e visitando il tuo sito ho preso molte informazioni utili.Grazie per i tuoi consigli e buon lavoro.
